Frequently Asked Questions
Answers on our mountain climbs, wilderness safaris, group tours, cultural programs, and beach holidays — from 25+ years of guiding trekkers and travelers across East Africa.
1. Mountain Climbing & Trekking (Kilimanjaro & Mount Meru)
What is the best route to climb Mount Kilimanjaro with Tanzania Travel & Safari Company Ltd?
The optimal route depends on your preferred scenery, route difficulty, and acclimatization schedule. Our expert mountain guides recommend:
- Lemosho & Machame Routes: Exceptional success rates due to excellent "climb high, sleep low" profiles and panoramic views (6 to 8 days recommended).
- Rongai Route: Approaches from the northern side near the Kenyan border; quieter and drier during shoulder seasons.
- Marangu Route: The classic route offering basic dormitory-style hut accommodations rather than tented camping.
How many days does it take to climb Mount Kilimanjaro?
The duration of your trek depends primarily on the route you select and your acclimatization strategy. Most of our expeditions range between 6 and 8 days, which provides an optimal balance between scenic variety and physical acclimatization.
- 5-Day Fast-Track Trek: Designed strictly for experienced hikers who have already acclimatized to high altitudes before the climb.
- 6 to 8-Day Standard Expeditions: Our most recommended routes (such as Lemosho, Machame, and Rongai Northern Circuit), offering superior acclimatization profiles and significantly higher summit success rates.
- 9-Day+ Crater Camping Expeditions: Designed for adventurers seeking an extended wilderness experience, including an overnight stay inside the Kilimanjaro Crater.
As the highest peak in Africa and the world's tallest free-standing mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro offers one of the most accessible high-altitude summit experiences globally. While major peaks like Mount Everest take 6 to 9 weeks, and Denali or Aconcagua require 2 to 3 weeks, Tanzania Travel & Safari Company Ltd can guide you to the Roof of Africa in just 5 to 9 days.
How fit do I need to be for a high-altitude climb?
High technical fitness or mountaineering experience is not required, as Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru are non-technical trekking peaks. However, strong cardiovascular endurance is essential. We recommend a 3- to 6-month pre-climb conditioning regimen focused on hiking, stair climbing, and aerobic exercises.
How does Tanzania Travel & Safari Company Ltd ensure mountain safety?
Safety is our top priority on every expedition:
- Daily Health Monitoring: Our certified wilderness guides conduct twice-daily health checks using pulse oximeters and Lake Louise scoring systems.
- Emergency Equipment: Every mountain team carries medical-grade supplemental oxygen, comprehensive first-aid kits, and satellite communications.

8. Booking, Payments & Financial Security
What payment methods do you accept, and how is my booking secured?
Tanzania Travel & Safari Company Ltd accepts online card payment (Visa, MasterCard and American Express) and international bank wire transfers. Once your itinerary is agreed, we send an invoice with instructions for paying online by card or by bank transfer. We never publish our bank details on this website, so if you ever receive payment details that differ from your invoice, call us on +255 754 294 365 before paying. Bookings are officially confirmed upon receipt of deposit, with balance terms clearly outlined in your custom travel contract.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellation terms depend on park permit regulations, internal flight conditions, and lodge cancellation windows. Complete terms and conditions are provided with every custom proposal. We strongly advise all clients to carry comprehensive travel insurance covering trip cancellation and medical emergencies.
9. Entry Requirements & Mandatory Insurance
Is travel insurance mandatory to enter Tanzania or Zanzibar?
Yes. Since 1 October 2026 the Government of Tanzania requires incoming foreign visitors to hold a state inbound travel insurance policy to enter mainland Tanzania or Zanzibar, and it is checked at immigration. It costs $44 USD per adult and $22 USD per child aged 3 to 17, with infants under three free. One policy is valid for up to 92 days from arrival and covers multiple entries. Residents of East African Community and SADC member states, diplomats, transit passengers and certain permit holders are exempt.
Where do I buy it?
Online, before you fly, from the portal matching where you land first. Arriving on the mainland — Kilimanjaro (JRO), Dar es Salaam (DAR) or a land border — use inbound.nicinsurance.co.tz. Arriving in Zanzibar at Abeid Amani Karume International (ZNZ), use inbound.visitzanzibar.go.tz. You only need one policy either way, and you should carry the certificate with your passport and visa.
Does it replace my own travel insurance?
No. The state policy covers emergency medical treatment, evacuation, repatriation and travel disruption inside Tanzania. It does not cover trip cancellation, curtailment, or the flying doctor cover we strongly recommend for Kilimanjaro climbs and remote safari areas. We ask every client to arrange comprehensive private cover in addition to it. Full detail is on our practical info page.
