Rwanda

Overview

Nestled in the heart of East Africa, Rwanda blends breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and a history of resilience. Begin in Kigali, the capital, where the Genocide Memorial stands alongside bustling markets, art galleries, and cafés. Akagera National Park offers classic savannah game drives across open plains and shimmering lakes, Lake Kivu invites lakeside relaxation and boat rides, and Nyungwe Forest is a sanctuary for chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, and canopy walks above the treetops. The headline draw remains Volcanoes National Park, home to the endangered mountain gorilla and some of the most profound wildlife encounters on the continent.

Whether you're looking for abundant wildlife, rich cultural heritage, or simply a place to disconnect from the modern world, Rwanda offers an unparalleled experience. It remains one of the few places on Earth where nature dictates the rhythm of life.

Not to Miss

Tap any of these to see what it is and which trips go there.

The Rwandan slope of the Virunga range, and where Dian Fossey did her work. Roughly a dozen habituated mountain gorilla families are tracked here, each visited by a maximum of eight people for one strictly limited hour. Golden monkey trekking in the bamboo zone is a gentler second option.

When to go
June to September and December to February for the driest trails, though trekking runs year-round.

One of the oldest montane rainforests in Africa, dense enough to have survived the last ice age intact. Chimpanzee tracking starts before dawn, and a suspension bridge carries you 70 meters above the canopy floor with the forest dropping away on both sides.

When to go
June to September and December to February.

Rwanda's only savannah park, on the Tanzanian border. Its wildlife was devastated in the 1990s; lion were reintroduced in 2015 and black rhino in 2017, restoring the Big Five. A boat safari on Lake Ihema is the best way to see hippo, large crocodile and, with luck, shoebill.

When to go
June to September for game viewing; the wet months are best for birds.

One of the African Great Lakes, sitting along the Congolese border with no crocodile, no hippo and no bilharzia — which makes it one of the few large lakes in the region safe to swim in. The Congo Nile trail along its shore is among the best drives in the country.

When to go
Year-round.

The resting place of more than 250,000 people and the country's principal memorial to the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. It is a difficult couple of hours and an essential one — almost every visitor finds it reframes the rest of their time in Rwanda.

When to go
Year-round. Allow at least two hours.
