Mozambique

Overview

Mozambique runs for more than 2,500 kilometers down the Indian Ocean, and its appeal is split between the water and the bush. Offshore, the Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos hold some of the least developed coral islands in Africa — Two Mile Reef for diving, dhow sailing between the islands, and whale sharks and manta rays off Tofo for much of the year. Inland, Gorongosa National Park is one of the continent's genuine conservation comebacks: its wildlife was all but wiped out during the civil war and has been rebuilt over two decades of restoration work. Add an Afro-Portuguese cultural inheritance, the UNESCO-listed Ilha de Moçambique, and the remote Niassa Reserve in the far north, and it works either as a beach extension after an East African safari or as a trip in its own right.

Whether you're looking for abundant wildlife, rich cultural heritage, or simply a place to disconnect from the modern world, Mozambique offers an unparalleled experience. It remains one of the few places on Earth where nature dictates the rhythm of life.

Five islands protected as a national park that is mostly ocean. Two Mile Reef is the best-known dive site on the coast, the interior dunes hide freshwater lakes, and the archipelago holds one of the last viable dugong populations in the western Indian Ocean.

When to go
April to November. Whale sharks and manta rays are most reliable October to March.

Thirty-two islands strung along the far northern coast, far less developed than Bazaruto and reached by light aircraft. Matemo and Medjumbe sit at the remote end of it — Medjumbe is essentially a sandbar with a reef around it and a handful of beachfront bungalows.

When to go
May to November. Humpback whales pass through June to October.

At the southern end of the Great Rift Valley, and one of the most remarkable conservation stories on the continent. Its wildlife was almost entirely destroyed during the civil war; two decades of restoration have brought back lion, elephant, buffalo and more than 400 bird species.

When to go
May to October, when the floodplain dries and game concentrates.

A long stretch of the Inhambane coast that has become one of the best places in the world to swim with whale sharks and giant manta rays, both present for much of the year. The diving is excellent and the town itself stays deliberately low-key.

When to go
October to March for whale sharks and mantas; year-round for diving.

A UNESCO World Heritage site and the former capital of Portuguese East Africa — a small coral island carrying a stone town of 16th-century churches, a fort and Swahili quarters, connected to the mainland by a single-lane bridge. It is layered and quiet and unlike anywhere else on the coast.

When to go
May to November.

One of the largest and least visited protected areas in Africa, in the far north and reached only by light aircraft. Elephant, sable, eland, buffalo and leopard across miombo woodland, with over 300 bird species along the Lugenda River — and almost no other vehicles.

When to go
June to October.
