What to Pack for a Kilimanjaro Climb
Gear Up for the Summit
Climbing Kilimanjaro is a journey through five distinct climatic zones, from wet rainforest to sub-zero arctic peaks. Packing the correct clothing and gear is crucial not only for your comfort but also for your safety.
Here is our definitive, guide-tested packing list:
1. Layering System (Clothing)
- Base Layer: Moisture-wicking thermal tops and bottoms (synthetic or merino wool). Avoid cotton.
- Mid Layer: Warm fleece jacket or lightweight down sweater.
- Outer Layer: Waterproof, windproof, breathable shell jacket and pants (Gore-Tex or equivalent).
- Insulated Down Jacket: Heavyweight down jacket for cold evenings and summit night.
2. Footwear
- Trekking Boots: Broken-in, waterproof boots with good ankle support.
- Camp Shoes: Lightweight sneakers or sandals for relaxing at camp.
- Socks: 4-5 pairs of wool hiking socks, plus 2 pairs of warm liners.
3. Equipment & Accessories
- Sleeping Bag: Rated to at least -15°C (4 season).
- Duffel Bag: 80-90L water-resistant duffel for porters to carry.
- Daypack: 25-35L pack for you to carry water, camera, and extra layers during the day.
- Trekking Poles: Adjustable poles to save your knees on the descent.
