8-Day Shira Route

Kilimanjaro from the west — eight days across the high Shira Plateau, a quiet night at Moir Camp, and the climb-high, sleep-low line via Lava Tower and Barranco to the summit at Uhuru Peak.

The Shira route shares its western approach with the Lemosho route, but starts higher: a vehicle takes you up to the trailhead, so the first day's walk is short and you begin on the plateau rather than in the forest. Over about 70 km you cross moorland and alpine desert to the glaciers of the summit, and the detour to Moir Camp, beneath the Lent Hills, adds an extra night of acclimatization away from the busier camps.

From Lava Tower the route joins the southern circuit: the Barranco Wall, Karanga and Barafu, then a midnight start for Stella Point and Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Every climb carries emergency oxygen, a portable hyperbaric chamber and daily pulse oximeter checks, and camp includes a private toilet and four-season tents.
