Hidden Gems of Stone Town, Zanzibar
Wandering the Labyrinth
Stone Town is the cultural heart of Zanzibar, a UNESCO World Heritage site where Swahili, Arab, Indian, Persian, and European influences blend seamlessly in narrow coral-stone alleys. While many visitors rush through on their way to the beaches, Stone Town deserves a slow exploration.
Here are some of our favorite hidden spots to discover:
- The Darajani Market Spice Alleys: Follow your nose away from the main stalls deep into the small side alleys where family spice traders grind fresh cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon.
- Emerson on Hurumzi Rooftop: Book a traditional floor-seated dinner at sunset for one of the most stunning views over the town's tin roofs and minarets.
- Jaw's Corner: Pull up a plastic chair at this tiny public square where local elders gather to drink strong black cardamom-spiced coffee and discuss politics.
- The Old Fort Amphitheater: Built by Omani Arabs in the 17th century, the fort often hosts free open-air acoustic music sessions by musicians from the Dhow Countries Music Academy.
