TRIP OVERVIEW
Embark on an awe-inspiring 8-day journey to conquer the pinnacle of Africa – Mount Kilimanjaro. The adventure commences at the Lemosho trailhead on the Western side of the mountain, guiding you through its most breathtaking landscapes. Converging with the Machame route beyond Shira Camp on Day 4, the ascent continues to Barafu Camp before the final push to the summit through Stella Point. The descent follows the Mweka route, offering a comprehensive and unforgettable Kilimanjaro experience.
Day 1: Kilimanjaro Forest
Starting Elevation: 6,890 feet / 2100 meters
Ending Elevation: 8,695 feet / 2650 meters
Distance: 4 miles / 7 km
Time: 4-6 hours
Climate Zone: Afromontane Forest
After a hearty breakfast, depart for Kilimanjaro National Park. Upon arriving at the Lemosho Trail, commence your hike through the lush Afromontane forest, encountering steep sections along the way. A picnic lunch en route prepares you for the hike to Forest Camp, your accommodation for the night.
Day 2: Shira 2
Starting Elevation: 8,695 feet / 2650 meters
Ending Elevation: 12,632 feet / 3850 meters
Distance: 11 miles / 17 km
Time: 10-12 hours
Climate Zone: Heath
Embark on an ascent through Podocarpus and Juniper Forest, emerging onto the expansive Shira Plateau. Your guide sets a steady pace as you acclimatize to the higher altitudes. Lunch at Shira 1 Camp sustains you for the trek to Shira 2 Camp, where you’ll spend the night.
Day 3: Barranco Camp
Starting Elevation: 12,632 feet / 3850 meters
Ending Elevation: 12,796 feet / 3900 meters
Distance: 6 miles / 10 km
Time: 6-7 hours
Climate Zone: Alpine Desert
Traverse Kibo’s slopes and enter the alpine desert. The “walk high, sleep low” strategy takes you to Lava Tower for lunch before descending to Barranco Camp. This acclimatization day enhances your readiness for the summit.
Day 4: Karanga Camp
Starting Elevation: 12,796 feet / 3900 meters
Ending Elevation: 13,108 feet / 3995 meters
Distance: 3 miles / 5 km
Time: 4-5 hours
Climate Zone: Alpine Desert
Ascend Barranco Wall, known for its giant groundsels, and journey through glacial valleys to Karanga Camp. A shorter hiking day allows time for relaxation and preparation for the summit attempt.
Day 5: Barafu
Starting Elevation: 13,108 feet / 3995 meters
Ending Elevation: 15,332 feet / 4673 meters
Distance: 2.5 miles / 4 km
Time: 4-5 hours
Climate Zone: Alpine Desert
Ascend to Barafu Camp, a desolate alpine desert with glimpses of Mawenzi. Rest and dine early in anticipation of the summit bid.
Day 6: Summit Bid / Mweka Camp
Starting Elevation: 15,332 feet / 4673 meters
Ending Elevation: 10,171 feet / 3100 meters
Distance: 11 miles / 18 km
Time: 14-16 hours
Climate Zones: Alpine Desert, Arctic, Heath
Embark on the final summit push before dawn, ascending via Stella Point to reach Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. Following the descent to base camp, hike to Mweka Camp for your last night on the mountain.
Day 7: Return to Arusha
Starting Elevation: 10,171 feet / 3100 meters
Ending Elevation: 5,381 feet / 1640 meters
Distance: 6 miles / 10 km
Time: 3-4 hours
Climate Zone: Afromontane Forest
Descend through the Afromontane forest and bid farewell to the mountain crew. After a refreshing shower at your lodge, a Summits Africa Representative congratulates you and addresses any queries about your onward journey.
