Great Migration Serengeti
July, August, September is the long dry season, and this is the time the Serengeti Great Migration, in other words, the wildebeest migration is moving north with the thundershowers. August is time for the Wildebeest annual rut (mating), and this happens in the North of the Serengeti National Park in an area called Kogatende. However, before reaching the mating grounds the Mara River needs to cross and this provides for some amazing wildlife viewing.
Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest can congregate at crossing points: all crossing in a single continuous wave of beasts. And all this while tooth and claw are waiting around the sides to pick off the weak and the careless.
Besides the incredible wildlife in Kogatende another very positive feature is that there are very few lodges and camps here so, all the viewing can happen with few others around.
While in the Serengeti area, we recommend the use the lightweight camp or stay in the lovely Sayari Camp or similar.
After the amazing experience of your life time, We will take you to other areas in the north Tanzania where you can also enjoy the flora and fauna experience. These areas are Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire national parks.
Tarangire National Park is also amazing during the dry season. Being a long river valley and in an area with a massive elephant population the area is the only source of water for these animals from July till mid-November and a vast number of wildlife can be found in this park.
Lake Manyara National Park is a exquisite all-year park. It is a small park bordered almost on all sides; it is hard for animals to move out (They hardly find no reason to migrate as the park provide them all their necessities including plenty of water and green pastures). So, for a guaranteed good wildlife experience we recommend visiting this park any time from January to December.
Ngorongoro Crater is good year round. It does get very dry during some period of the year however the game is always good. The months of December, January and July – August are always very busy with other tourists.

The gently rolling countryside is dotted with these majestic trees, which seem to dwarf the animals that feed beneath them. Tarangire National Park covers approximately 2,600 square kilometers and, in the dry season, is second only to Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area in concentrations of wildlife. The park is spectacular in the dry season when many of the migratory wildlife species come back to the permanent waters of Tarangire River. Huge herds of elephants gather to stay in Tarangire until the onset of the rains when they migrate again to new grazing areas.
